Women could join the priesthood. Every temple had priestesses who were musicians, dancers or singers. They played cymbals, clappers, sistra and harps, or clapped rhythmically. During festivals, the priestesses danced through the streets playing their instruments and blessing the people in the name of the god.

Some women held the title of high priest in the temples of goddesses such as Hathor and Neith.
