Officials worked directly for the state, for a temple, for a noble’s estate or for a businessman. Below the vizier there were many officials and scribes, each with one or more job titles. Official posts were often hereditary, passing from father to son or adopted son.

It was possible to rise up the ranks. Horemheb, the official in charge of the army, became pharaoh in about 1323 BCE, at the end of the 18th Dynasty.
