The alabaster workers used similar tools to the stone masons, but where the masons worked with hard and soft stone, the alabaster workers used soft Egyptian alabaster and slate. They made mostly pots and bowls for domestic and funerary use. Making a pot, they started with shaping and roughly finishing the outside of the pot before drilling out the inside. The tubular drill removed a core from the stone, and the alabaster workers used wing-shaped stones to shape the inside of the pot.
