Faience was used to make a wide range of objects, including New Year jars for ritual use, shabtis for burials and beads and pendants for jewellery. Faience was used to make large objects, but the use of moulds allowed mass-production of mainly small items. Faience was not used just because it was relatively cheap – the colour and brilliance of faience was important because both linked to rebirth. Because of this a large part of the faience workers output was for burial use.
