The ancient Egyptians were weaving linen at least 7,000 years ago. The flax went through several stages of preparation before it could be spun into thread and woven, including soaking in water to ret or rot the hard outer fibres of the stem. Two types of loom were used: a horizontal loom, which was set up on the ground, and a vertical loom, probably introduced about 3,500 years ago, set up against a wall.
