We know about mummification from studying mummies, from the images of mummification painted on coffins and tomb walls, from archaeological finds and from what people wrote about it. The Egyptians themselves wrote very little. The Greek historian Herodotus, visiting Egypt about 2,400 years ago, recorded three methods of mummification, depending on how much the family could afford. His version must be treated with caution, as he was looking at mummification long after it passed its peak. The best mummies were produced in the 21st Dynasty, almost 3,100 years ago, when the embalming techniques were fully developed and applied.
