The body took about 40 days to dry out using natron. The chief embalmer, the Master of Secrets, was linked to the god Anubis who had mummified the god Osiris. Others in the embalming workshop did most of the work, including tearing old sheets into bandages and wrapping the body. In the Roman period, about 2,000 years ago, the embalmers tied a name tag to each body, so they knew which body was which and so the name was preserved for ever. The Romans also placed a painted portrait over the face of the mummy.
