The embalmers placed amulets on the body as they wrapped it. Fashions in wrapping changed over time. For much of Egyptian history, a cartonnage mask was placed over the head of the mummy, but between 2,700 and 2,300 years ago, the mummy was covered with a network of faience beads and amulets in the form of a winged scarab and the Four Sons of Re, sometimes with a beadwork mask over the face.
