Coffin and tomb
The prayers and images painted on coffins (including the Coffin Texts) protected the body and ensured that the dead person knew the correct prayers for their journey to the Afterlife. The tomb gave the last level of physical and spiritual protection. Pyramids for the early pharaohs had prayers (the Pyramid Texts) carved on the inner walls. Later pharaohs had special Books of the Underworld for their rock-cut tombs. The burial chambers and coffins of the later nobles were often covered in prayers from the Book of the Dead. All these prayers and images helped ensure the dead reached the Afterlife safely and had all they needed to live forever.
