Model food, laid out in a pottery offering tray or soul house, was a cheap way of giving food for the dead. A soul house could be a simple tray of food or a detailed model of a house and courtyard, placed at the entrance to the tomb. The food could include loaves of bread or a whole cow, with beer jars and a pool for libations. A richer person might have a carved or painted image on the wall of their tomb, showing rich pastries or cakes as well as the basics of bread and beer.
