The ancient Egyptians buried their dead with the possessions they believed would be needed in the Afterlife. Cosmetic items were often included as essentials. Men and women wore kohl, which helped to protect the eyes from bright sunshine. Palettes for grinding minerals to powder, kohl pots to hold the powder, kohl sticks to apply it to the eye, mirrors and combs were all needed for the Afterlife. Luxury items such as perfumes and oils for the skin were often asked for on the stela or placed in the tomb.
