Weaving was carried out in workshops, run by the state or a temple, and at home. Men and women worked as weavers. They produced different qualities of cloth, from fine to coarse.
The writer of a letter about 3,200 years ago agreed to weave two kilts and sew a tunic and a pair of sleeves in exchange for two baskets and two sieves. Most garments were plain, but pleating was used as a decorative feature as shown on this carving and possibly on one of the fragments of cloth.
