Ku (Free Essence 32) by Ikuta Niyoko ????? [Artist's name in Japanese Kanji characters] 2013 Kyoto, Japan

Ikuta Niyoko (born 1953) seeks to capture “the complexity of light as it reflects, refracts and passes through broken cross sections of sheet glass”. She makes a sketch to capture her emotions then sets to work with a glass-cutter, cutting thin sheets of laminated glass to create the three-dimensional form.

Each piece of glass is attached to the next using a special adhesive that hardens and becomes transparent with ultraviolet light. In the Free Essence series the artist explores ideas relating to the Buddhist concept of emptiness. The viewer can look down the centre of the ‘wave’ which seems to be entirely empty but is in fact solid glass.
