John Huggins was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire in 1938. In 1975, he wrote about Caught Inside No.1 that it 'was first made in clay, cast into plaster and then cast into bronze by the foundry at Bristol Polytechnic. The title is surfing slang for getting into a dangerous situation in big waves and some of the forms in the sculpture are supposed to be threatening like waves.' A year later, Huggins set up his own foundry in Marshfield Wiltshire. His bronze sculptures have a distinct patina, often with contrasting finishes.
