Punch bowl and ladle

Rum was usually drunk as rum punch. This was made with rum, water, sugar, spices, oranges and lemons, all mixed in a large bowl and ladled out into glasses. The bowl is hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware. It was made in Bristol in imitation of fashionable and expensive Chinese porcelain.

: Oval bowl with everted rim. Inset into base, a silver coin inscribed on one side: ' M UTRAQUE UNUM & PLUS VITE 1770 '; on the other: ' CAROLUS III D.G. HISPAN ET IND.REX '. Whalebone handle, twisted at end and with silver tip is pinned into silver socket attached to bowl by flat, bifurcated terminal.
