Rum was usually drunk as rum punch. This was made with rum, water, sugar, spices, oranges and lemons, all mixed in a large bowl and ladled out into glasses. The bowl is hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware. It was made in Bristol in imitation of fashionable and expensive Chinese porcelain.
