Copper coin (cartwheel penny) polished smooth and engraved on both sides with an inscription and embellishments. Thick lettering engraved with several lines per downstroke. Convict tokens engraved by the donor or by a professional convict, usually on the hulks or in gaol awaiting transportation. They were intended as a keepsake for the family or sweethearts of the transportee.

Polished copper coin engraved for a convict token. Design pricked into the coin, very worn on the obverse but clear on the reverse. Obverse: "TO / PA...Y / FROM / E MEREDITH / JUNE 12 / 1836" [possibly PADDY] Reverse: "A / TOKEN OF / LOVE AND / AFFECTION / FORGET ME NOT" Such tokens were made by the condemned or a professional convict whilst awaiting trial or transportation, as a keepsake for friends or family.
