Drawing of a painted relief from Xochicalco, Mexico. Watercolour. East side of lower terrace. Drawing in black ink and red watercolour background. It is in two parts. The upper drawing shows a long serpent with the head on the left facing right. The body curves up and down and up again ending in a feathered tail hanging down. Under the first curve is a scroll patterned stand and on the second curve there is seated a cross legged man wearing an elaborate feather headdress. Rosettes decorate the serpent's body. A large tongue which is forked and curled extends from the serpent's mouth. The lower part of the drawing shows the rest of the relief which extends to the right of the above. It was joined by a panel of trelliswork and the rest of the relief is a mirror image of the above pattern, -serpent etc.

The upper drawing shows a serpent with the head on the left and a figure is placed under the first curve of the body. On top of the second curve the tail hangs down in the form of long feathers. The serpent's tongue is forked and curled. The figures are of chief's sitting crosslegged on seats and are alike in costume (They wear an elaborate headdress of feathers) and position but their faces have different expressions. Their bodies are in full front view with the head in each case turned to one shoulder or to the other and seen in profile. They face to the right. One arm is uplifted the other hangs down. There are glyphs of speech motifes around the figures. The lower drawing is a mirror image of the above.
