Mahesh Patel [MP] This is a small film that documents the Ganesh Chaturthi that took place at the end of August 2014. The festival spends 10 days and nights and takes place every year. Here in Bristol, our Hindu temple has been holding this festival for last six years. Ganesh is the elephant-headed God, removal of obstacles and the giver of wisdom. The kitchen at the temple prepares fresh food for everyone throughout the festival. Speaker 1 This is nice and sweet. Speaker 2 Hello at the moment. We are ready to cook. And I got all the ladies and they're already preparing it. Singing MP He’s paraded through the temple to the pandal a temporary shrine. MP The chanting of mantras ritual called the Prin Patra Puja [?] evokes the presence of Ganesh into the statue. The statue is also anointed with Red Chandan powder. Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesh every day during the festival. People and families make donations to pray near Ganesh. The priest will bless them. Ganesh is offered Indian sweet laddus during the festival. They are his favourite. Speaker 2 For Ganesh, we got the special lagwa[?], his favourite? Speaker 2 Why is it his favourite, lagwas[?], was any particular reason why? Speaker 1 Yeah, because when he was smaller, he used to eat a laddu. Speaker 2 There's a certain reason. When we bring it for the staff now, he starts taking all the evil. So what is in the present when he will start collecting and he stumbled, he'll start getting bigger and bigger. So when we if they kick off the set for the 7th. That's where we just take it with [unclear]. And then next year, when he comes, he'll bring the laddu again [?]. MP After the people have performed the aarti, food is served in the Gandhi Hall. Speaker Ohh, thank you very much. We're having lovely food. And we are enjoying. Speaker One of the main reasons I come to the [unclear], and of course the company's so good, absolutely brilliant. MP At the end of the night, the lights are turned off and Ganesh waits for the next day for it all to start again. On Saturday there was a play performed by young children about how Ganesh got his elephant head. Singing MP In the evening there was a group who came down from London and played devotional Ganesh songs. For 10 days there are prayers and aartis every night, and our food of course. By Sunday, metaphorically, the statue has grown fed with all the offerings he has observed all the evil things Ganesh is taken to the water. Singing MP Coaches were organised for people to go to Portishead. For the Ganesh visarjan, the submerging of Ganesh. Singing MP When he goes Ganesh is taking all the bad things away and bringing us good luck.
