Black-figure amphora or oil jar. Black-figure ware is named for the technique of decorating pottery which gave black figures against a red background. Large oil jars like these were given as prizes to the athletes at the Greater Panathenaic games held every four years in Athens. This small version, with Athena on one side and wrestlers on the other, was made as a souvenir rather than a prize. Made in Athens, Greece, between about 556 and 146 BC.
