‘Equipped with every modern contrivance for handling the largest ocean-going ships’ Bristol and the Great War by George F Stone and Charles Wells, 1920

The Floating Harbour in the centre of Bristol was replaced by the Avonmouth Dock as ships grew bigger and shippers wanted better facilities to load and unload.

In turn, the Avonmouth Dock was expanded by the Royal Edward Dock to accommodate even bigger ships and modern equipment. Building began in 1902 and in 1908 King Edward VII opened the dock named in his honour. Shipping from here traded with the Empire and the rest of the world.
