Robert was the sixth child of Richard Bright and Sarah Heywood. He married into an another influential Bristol family when he wed Caroline, daughter of Thomas Tyndall.

He was the President of the Free Port Association and lived in a house in Abbots Leigh that was later known as The Chantry.
