Lehmbruck's long slender figures are believed to have been influential on Alberto Giacometti but this Torso is a more solid and inert form. Like many pieces by Lehmbruck's admired Rodin, this sculpture is a fragment of the whole body, focusing on particular body parts that seem to emerge from the material. After Lehmbruck's suicide, many of his sculptures were recast in bronze, and there are three such casts known to have been taken of this work.
