Proclamation Car, about 1918

This vehicle was used in Bristol to proclaim Elizabeth Windsor Queen of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth in 1952. Drawn by two horses, it was ridden to the old gates of the city where the proclamation was read each time.

It was used again on 11 September 2022 to proclaim the death of Her Majesty the Queen and the succession of King Charles III to the throne. On this occasion, it served as a static platform for the proclamation outside City Hall.

Built by coach builders J Fuller & Co. of Bristol, it was originally used as a wagonette on businessman Sir George Stanley White's estate from about 1920 to 1946. Sir Stanley donated it to the City and Council of Bristol in 1948 and it was used as an exercise brake (training vehicle) for the Lord Mayor's horses until 1991.

It has been in Bristol Museums’ collection ever since.
