"We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making." Extinction Rebellion statement, 2019.

Extinction Rebellion (XR) was launched in October 2018 with a “Declaration of Rebellion" embracing the principles of non-violent, direct protest action. [See https://extinctionrebellion.uk/declaration/]

In its own words, it seeks "to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse" posed by "business as usual”. It hopes to achieve this through targeted protests and building coalitions with other groups.

XR's three core demands are:

"Tell the Truth" about the climate emergency;

"Act Now" to prevent further destruction;

"Decide Together" through citizens' assemblies to shape a better world.

From the outset, XR has had a strong Bristol connection. In the UK, XR Bristol is one of the biggest regional XR groups. It has also been one of the most highly organised with up to 15 working subgroups, from arts to actions, and finance to regenerative culture. Exctinction Rebellion's distinctive Red Rebels hail from Bristol, having emerged from the Invisible Circus, the popular street-performing collective.
