Guinea grains, Afromomum melegueta were also called 'grains of paradise' or 'melegueta pepper', these were all names for a seed obtained from the 'Grain Coast' of West Africa. It was a substitute for very expensive pepper from the East Indies. Bristol merchants imported it on their slave ships, one of the largest cargoes being 10,262 lb (4,575 kg) brought in on the Rachell in 1711.
