The Egypt Exploration Fund excavated the cemetery at Hiw in 1898 CE.

Tomb W38 had a shaft over 3 metres deep, with several side chambers at the bottom. These objects were found in one of the chambers. The owner died in the 12th Dynasty (c. 1985-1956 BCE). This was a rich tomb, which had been robbed. The tomb robbers missed a few small objects: a fish pendant, ivory kohl stick, imitation amulet case (not in the collection), spouted alabaster dish and pots, sphinx amulet and three scarabs.
