The cemetery at the town of Ah-mose I at Abydos was excavated by the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1912 CE. The burials were made in the 18th Dynasty (about 1550-1295 BCE). Most had been robbed, and only small objects were left. The ones found in Tomb D 226 were all personal objects, such as mirrors, a knife for cutting cloth or leather, and jewellery. Other tombs also had specially-made funerary objects such as shabtis.

The entrance to tomb D 226 was through a shallow shaft, which led into a large brick chamber with a barrel-vaulted roof. These large, shallow tombs often held several burials.
