Obverse painted in gouache with central cartouche of shepherd and sherherdess with bagpipes and basket near a river. Edged with gilt tambour work and spangles. On either side similar decoration of table with flowers. Border, ends and ground painted and gilded with scrolls. Carved and pierced ivory sticks and guards with silvered and spangled decoration. Paired sticks alternate pierced and gold pairs with sequinned pairs. Guards carved and gilded with urn and flowers and male figures.

Verse between two flower vases; centre section empty; floral meander; band of small motifs: trees, flowers, birds. Signed and dated in bottom band. Verse: 'In Books or Work or healthful Play Let my first Years be past That I may give for ev'ry Day Some good Account at last Just as the Tree cut down that fell To North or Southward there it lies So Man departs to Heav'n or Hell Fix'd in the State wherein he dies'
