Fitness instructor Carly Wilkinson (aka Project HB) was running classes in Bristol and Bath until venues were forced to close in March 2020. Despite contracting Coronavirus herself, she started to take her business online, initially broadcasting from her kitchen, then from her spare room.
Her classes included discoaerobics, barre, weights, aerobics, and wheelchair friendly seated workouts. Themed discoaerobics classes included 80s rock, festivals, Madonna, Halloween, and Christmas. Dressing up became popular and many of the classes felt like a night out.
At the end of May, Carly launched 'HBTV', a library of pre-recorded sessions for monthly subscribers. By November (the start of Lockdown 2) there were 35 subscribers.
She provided an online training session for other instructors who were adapting to online classes using technology that was new to them.
Word spread about Carly's body positive, fun sessions and soon it wasn't only her regular people joining classes, but people from much further afield than Bristol. The most popular class had 170 people taking part in discoaerobics, on New Years Eve.
Carly's classes provided a lifeline for people stuck at home, and created an incredible online community.
